EXTRA CHARGES

Example:

If a carer provides a service worth £100, a typical agency will deduct a fee of £12.50 (which is 12.5% of £100). It'll also add VAT (20% in the UK). The VAT on the remaining £87.50 would be £17.50, bringing the total deduction to £30.00 (£12.50 + £17.50). So, the carer will receive a payment of just £70 for their services (£100 - £30.00)

NO OWN CLIENTS

Example:

Jane, an independent carer for a care service platform, can only provide care services to John within the platform's service agreement.

If Jane decides to provide care services to John outside the platform without permission, her account with the platform will be terminated, and she will face fines and penalties of up to £3,000 for violating the terms and conditions.

This is because Jane does not "own" John as a client and cannot provide services to him outside the platform without the company's permission.

NO INDEPENDENCE

Example:

As a temporary care worker engaged through an intermediary business, Jane would be providing services on behalf of the business to the client. She may be considered to be only a hired contractor, as she signed a service agreement with the business.

LESS RECOGNITION

Example:

Jane's hard work and dedication may not be recognised or appreciated by some agencies / online platforms. Rewards and career growth opportunities may not be guaranteed as part of their intermediary business model or by Jane's contract agreement as a temporary worker.

LOWER INCOME

Example:

Jane's hourly rate may not reflect her level of experience. This is because other caregivers may offer lower rates on the platform, making it difficult for independent caregivers like Jane to charge more. This is especially true for caregivers who don't have many clients and need to remain competitive.

LOWER RATES

Example:
Jane's hourly rate may not reflect her level of experience. This is because other caregivers with may offer lower rates on the platform, making it difficult for independent caregivers like Jane to charge more. This is especially true for caregivers who don't have many clients and need to remain competitive.

LESS AUTONOMY

Example:

Jane may have less control over her work schedule and the specific tasks she's been  assigned to. That's because she's working under the terms outlined in the service agreement between the agency and the client. So, Jane is not truly an independent carer.
